Photography workshops in the context of the renewal, valorization and care of the public areas of Piazza Garibaldi in Naples (“the Beautiful Square”)
THE PROJECT IN DETAIL
Objectives
To promote the start of a process of urban, social and cultural renewal by developing the involvement of youths via creative and expressive activities.
To promote intercultural meeting and exchange, establishing forms of dialogue among youths belonging to different cultures and places, as well as a re-elaboration of one’s own experience.
To stimulate creativity in pre-adolescents and adolescents, which is fundamental to enable the youths self-discovery and understanding.
Beneficiairies
Approximately 40 adolescent and young Italians or immigrants (13-20 years old) that live in Naples, in particular Municipality 4, characterized by greater socio-economic and cultural deprivation.
Activities
The Experimental Photography and Creative Manipulation workshop is dedicated to the experimentation of analog and digital techniques, collage made up of photographic manipulation, all the way to painting and materials use. The Photographic Video-Narration workshop accompanies the participants in the realization of short-story audio-visuals mixing images, sounds and words in order to recount the experiences and places of daily life. The Participative Urban Photography workshop uses photography as an instrument of observation and narration with regards to the urban context, with particular attention to Piazza Garibaldi.
The project is part of the Beautiful Square project – activities aimed at the renewal, valorization and care of the public areas of Piazza Garibaldi in order to make the piazza a welcoming and inclusive space through a process of sharing in urban, social and cultural renewal. In this context, photography becomes an instrument to build community identity and participation, favoring the active involvement of youths and increasing the value of the territory.
In 2025, the project has already carried out three photography workshops: Analog Photography, Instantaneous Darkroom, Instant Photography and Storytelling, Photography workshop, contributing in a concrete way to the renewal and care of the public areas of Piazza Garibaldi.
