THE PROJECT IN SUMMARY
Photography workshops in the context of the renewal, valorization and care of the public areas of Piazza Garibaldi in Naples (“the Beautiful Square”)
THE PROJECT IN DETAIL
Objectives
To promote the start of a process of urban, social and cultural renewal by developing the involvement of youths via creative and expressive activities.
To promote intercultural meeting and exchange, establishing forms of dialogue among youths belonging to different cultures and places, as well as a re-elaboration of one’s own experience.
To stimulate creativity in pre-adolescents and adolescents, which is fundamental to enable the youths self-discovery and understanding.
Beneficiairies
Approximately 40 adolescent and young Italians or immigrants (13-20 years old) that live in Naples, in particular Municipality 4, characterized by greater socio-economic and cultural deprivation.
Activities
The project foresees the realization of three photography workshops (Analog photography, Darkroom, Instant photography; Event photography and Storytelling, Photographic workshop) in the context of the renewal, valorization and care of the public areas in Piazza Garibaldi (“the Beautiful Square”) with the aim of transforming Piazza Garibaldi into a place benefitting from urban, social, cultural and economic attention. The Beautiful Square was born during 2020, inspired by the idea of the plurality of people who “live” the square, in constant communication with the city administration and cofinanced by various entities (the Vismara Foundation, the Azimut Foundation, the Rut Foundation, the con il Sud Foundation, Unicredit S.P.A. and Intesa San Paolo).
The project considers art to be a vital cornerstone in educational activities and not just as a way to entertain children. Photographic workshops, particularly those dedicated to the visual arts – specifically the various forms of photography – play a fundamental role. Photography represents for the youths a privileged means of expression for self-narration, storytelling, biographies and contexts, to produce culture and exchange, to identify political lacunae and regain the stories and memories of the places and people who live there. The workshops aim to begin activities in photographic experimentation at different levels.
