THE PROJECT IN SUMMARY
A rap music workshop in the San Lorenzo quarter of Palermo, in collaboration with the Laboratorio Zen Insieme and Refugees Welcome Italia – Palermo Associations, and the About Music musicians collective.
THE PROJECT IN DETAIL
Objectives
To promote social inclusion and creative expression for a group of 15 youths from diverse socio-cultural contexts in Palermo via workshops that develop artistic and communication abilities in the area of rap music.
Beneficiairies
Approximately 15 youths between the ages of 14 and 28 residents in Palermo, among whom Romani, youths from the San Filippo Neri (ex-Zen) quarter, youths from the Sperone quarter and young refugees.
Activities
Continuing the collaboration begun in 2024 with the In Medias Res association, which for 2025 foresees the realization of three musical workshops at the Mind House cooperative, and an evening open to the public to present original tracks.
Specifically foreseen are: a storytelling and rap composition workshop (Feb-Apr 2025) composed of workshop presentation; technical analysis of rhyme and metrics; practical composition exercises; the exploration of social, political and personal themes in rap; creative writing techniques; exercises in brainstorming and free verse, sharing written lyrics; performance techniques and stage presence; and the presentation and sharing of rap lyrics created during the workshop. A workshop on the production of musical arrangements (May-June 2025) composed of: an introduction to beatmaking and the musical production of rap; an overview of essential instruments and software; the construction of drum rhythms and patterns; the use of samples and loops; the creation of bass lines; the development of melodies and harmonies; the use of synthesizers and sound effects; beat mixing and mastering; the optimization of sound; and the creation of complete musical arrangements. And a recording and track editing workshop (Sept.-Nov. 2025) composed of an introduction to audio recording; an overview of recording instruments and techniques; the configuration of DAW; recording vocal and instrumental tracks; effects chains; mixing recorded tracks; the use of equalizers, compressors and other effects; editing tracks; correcting errors and optimizing performance; and the creation of a final, balanced mix.
The entire project will be documented via video recordings of all the phases of the project. In the end, a video-story documentary will be produced, which is a key instrument for the diffusion of results, offering a visual narrative that enhances the efficacy and relevance of the project, making it accessible to a wider public and promoting its replicability in similar contexts.
This project continues collaboration begun in 2024 with “Lo Zen è uno spettacolo 3 ed”, that entailed the realization of artistic workshops at the Punto Luce in the San Filippo Neri (ex-Zen) quarter of Palermo in collaboration with the Laboratorio Zen Insieme and the Alf Leila Associatio.
