An adaptation of the play “Olympe”, and meetings in the juvenile penitentiary and schools of Rome and the province to educate about legality with the participation of female ex-prisoners sentenced to alternative measures of detention
THE PROJECT IN DETAIL
Objectives
To bring culture and education regarding legality to an area with a high level of marginalization and the risk of juvenile criminal behavior. To involve the youths of the territory and supply them with alternative means for getting together, reflecting and maturing.
Facilitating work and social inclusion for female ex-prisoners sentenced to alternative measures; preventing recidivism by promoting the acquisition of transversal, professional competencies via participation in cultural processes.
Beneficiairies
5 women, ex-prisoners of the Rebibbia prison sentenced to alternative measures of detention;
Approximately 300 minors attending secondary schools in Tor Bella Monaca, Labaro and Pomezia (Rome).
Activities
The project consists of creative activities that aim to sensitize youths regarding legality and social marginalization with the involvement of women who are ex-prisoners and actors of the “Olympe” play, which is staged in connection with the ‘Le donne del Muro Alto’ (women of the high wall) project which has been carried out by the Per Ananke association inside the women’s prison of Rebibbia for the last ten years. Theater is a valid instrument for personal and professional redemption for these women, who face difficulties in returning to civilian life.
The activities include the adaptation of the play Olympe in schools via weekly rehearsals, during which the script is studied and analyzed with support from the students of the Science Department training at the Roma Tre University.
A total of 8 meetings to educate about legality are also foreseen at three, first level secondary schools in Tor Bella Monaca, Labaro and Pomezia, and at the Juvenile Penitentiary of Casal del Marmo (Rome), held by women who are ex-prisoners sentenced to alternative means of detention. In this context, theater is the main instrument used to provide and consolidate competencies, among which active listening of oneself and others, the development of critical thought, dealing with problems and searching for creative and innovative solutions with regard to one’s life experience.
Finally, “Olympe” is staged for the selected schools at the Vittoria Theater in Rome, preceded and followed by a series of meetings dedicated to detention and post-detention, and the role of art and culture in the prison context, with the involvement of institutions, experts and the testimony of the company’s actors.
