THE PROJECT IN DETAIL
Objectives
To disseminate the evaluation of the impact achieved by the Puntozero Association in twenty-five years of work in the “C. Beccaria” Juvenile Penal Institute in Milan, during which time it built and opened a theatre, contributed to the ongoing debate about the role of theatre in prisons, and presented an innovative model that has as its focal point putting on productions and meeting with the public.
Beneficiairies
High school and university students; educators operating inside juvenile penal institutes; technicians/artists working in social theatre; the public frequenting the Puntozero Beccaria Theatre; readers interested in the theme of education in prisons.
Activities
The project entails the publication of the evaluation of the social impact (undertaken in 2019 with AMI support) of the theatrical workshops supported by AMI since 2017 and carried out by the Puntozero in the “C. Beccaria” Juvenile Penal Institute. The evaluation was undertaken by the Department of Humanistic Sciences at the Bicocca University of Milan in a participatory way with the heads of the theatrical company and the main stakeholders: the young prisoners, the people responsible for the theatrical company, the actors, prison guards, educators, administrative personnel, medical professionals, other trainers of professional workshops active in the Institute and the parents of the inmates through co-design meetings for an evaluation model and the identification of indicators, individual and group interviews and questionnaires. The publication aims to publicize a theatrical company project that is unique in Italy in a juvenile penal institute that works not only for the young inmates but also for the Territorial Services that are accessed by many youths outside the penal institute, in schools and universities and by citizens.
The publication is aimed also at high school and university students as an instrument to sensitize youth with regards to the themes of detention and punishment, which are generally not considered in our education system, and aims to contribute to the European debate on the theme of education in and outside prison.
